Approximately one out of four older patients in the emergency departmant have impaired cognition. These patients have an increased risk to experience functional decline after 3 and 12 months.
Recently, the APOP study published the results of 2130 older patients visiting the ED in Age and Ageing. Resident EM and PHD-student J.A. Lucke: “Cognition is not a routine measurement in the emergency department. Our research emphasizes the importance of screening for impaired cognition.” The LUMC, Leiden, will implement screening in daily practice to improve care for older patients.
