Prediction of hospitalization: a comparison between patients younger or older than 70 years

Approximately 23% of the patients aged <70 years and 43% of patients aged 70 years and older are hospitalized after an emergency department (ED) visit. Patients at increased risk can be identified by early available demographic and clinical factors. In a recent publication of patients visiting the ED in 2012, these results have been described. The derived and validated prediction model shows that predictors of hospitalization are comparable between age groups, but in older patients we are better to identify a high-risk group of patients. These results constitute preparatory work towards creating a screening instrument that could adequately predict hospital admission and consequently to reduce the length of ED stay in patients at highest risk.
